Is the quality of graphics important to you?
« on: September 30, 2014, 02:53:30 PM »
Between my brother and I, I do not really pay attention to the quality of graphics. My brother prefers those with realistic graphics, but I don't. I value the storyline and user-friendliness of the game. If it is very difficult to play, I just ignore the game. In fact, I love classic games that are 2D or pixelated.

I value both good graphics and a good storyline, but I agree with you that having a good storyline is more important for the quality of the game. I have more fun with some old, classic games that have good gameplay than with some new games that sacrificed good gameplay for fancy graphics. Minecraft is a perfect example that pixelated graphics makes no difference in quality of the game.

Not at all. I am a huge Quake player and I've always set my r_picmip to 4. (It basically removes all textures from everything and makes the walls just one bland solid color). I'd rather get the extra frames and have absolutely no jitter while I play then sit there and drool over a pretty graphic :D.. I find replayability and story to be some of the most important things a game can do.

With that said, I was awestruck with Guildwars 2's graphics. I have found myself just walking around looking at how beautiful it is and how creative those Asura are.

In my opinion its more about the gaming experience and the game play generally. In addition, as a kid I was used to crappy graphics so therefore it doesn't have a matter. Although new games are nowadays really realistic, for example the newest GTA is unbelievable realistic.

Personally I like playing games with cartoony graphics. I've enjoyed some with more realistic graphics but that isn't enough to keep me playing. I expect a level of quality from certain MMOs graphics-wise, but single player games can be in pretty much any style so long as it has a compelling story, fun gameplay mechanics, and replay value.

Personally, I think replay value is the most important. I don't buy many games every year, and I'm a bit of a completionist. I like to play a game once through, then multiple times after that to get all the achievements or see all the storylines. (I'm sure I'm in the minority there, I haven't met too many others who like to do that with games.)

Absolutely.  Once you see graphics like Red Dead Redemption or Skyrim, it's hard to go back to Frogger: The Great Quest.

Not all the time, game play is the most important thing of a game. If there is a good graphic game but bad game play it is immediately think it is bad. I don't think that a game needs graphics. The best example of this at this time is Shovel Knight. It is an 8 bit looking game but I don't think it is actually 8 bit.

I'd like to say no, but it does. In most cases I don't play a game if I don't like it's graphics. For example I didn't like the models and textures from Dark Souls 2 and I stopped playing after 10 minutes, then I went back after seeing a video on youtube with gameplay and it became my favorite RPG. So, I've came to the conclusion that even if you judge by graphics, give it a shot, make 4-5 missions and try everything out then say 'no'.

I like good graphics. I think games need to have good graphics. Now, what I mean by "good" graphics are graphics which are of a decent quality. No distracting low-res/repetitive textures, no bad anatomy for the characters, no bad color palettes that make enemies blend in with the background, no distracting graphical glitches, etc.

I also value style a lot. Like Team Fortress 2, Wind Waker or El Shaddai; games with a unique art style to them that you can easily recognize and is very pleasant to look at.

I also want the framerate to be stable. Framerate IS a part of graphics, after all, and having a game that constantly dips under 30fps is just silly. At least PCs don't have to worry much about this issue unless the games are horribly optimized.

It really depends! Graphics are really important on most of the games but there are some titles that I enjoy playing without them having extremely HD graphics.
For example, Minecraft is an awesome game and it's made out of pixels. They made the game features blend very well togheter and it also has an unique franchise, so there isn't always a need for high quality graphics as long as the game is fun!

You know, Minecraft is a good example of what I meant in my previous comment. The game has a very unique art style to it and the graphics are serviceable. I would actually call its graphics good, since everything looks like it's supposed to and such.

A game I would say has bad graphics is something like Proteus. That game just looks like a random mess of pixelated crap, it's hard to really tell what's what ("oh, so that garbled mess of pixels is a bunny or something, I guess?"). This doesn't happen with Minecraft, the graphics are clear and serviceable even though the game has an art style based on low-poly models with pixelated textures.

I definitely care about graphics, a lot more today than in the past (well until Myst came along, all the graphics were rather low-quality/pixelated, and even then Myst was completely pre-rendered).  However these days, I prefer higher-quality graphics. Yes a good story line is also important, but I'm just a visual person and enjoy higher quality graphics better. It's probably one of the many reasons I really didn't enjoy Minecraft that much.

It's all dependent in the relationship that graphics has with the game play of a video game. Pong is still a fun game to play after all these years, but it's graphics are very limited. Yet some recently sold games may have graphics superior to Pong, but it's game play and entertainment quality is very low and uninteresting.  Then again, it's all about one's perspective.

Of course. To me, the graphics are the most important aspect of gaming. For instance, the graphics on Madden 2015 are stunning. The game play is also greatly improved, but without the improvement in graphics I don't think I would enjoy the game quite as much. So while game play is important, the graphics are the most important part, to me at least.

How a game looks can be a major factor in whether or not I like a game.  If a game looks exceptionally good, I might let slip a couple of features I wish were implemented but were not, or bugs that aren't game breaking simply because the game is so visually appealing I don't really notice or care to notice the above mentioned factors.

I still enjoy plenty of games with less than up-to-date graphics, however they have to have withstood the tests of time and still bring a great story or gameplay mechanic to compete in my library of more newer games.
